cOMMUTERS ON A CITY BUS DON’T KNOW EACH OTHER IN WAKING LIFE.

bUT AT NIGHT, IN DREAMS, THEY DO…

Fellow Travellers (2016)

The idea for “Fellow Travellers” came to me while listening to “The Artifact & Living” by Michael Andrews. The images quickly became something of a music video as I pictured people on a bus coming home from work. Then, they would enter their homes, greet their families, pets, or no one at all. They would get ready for bed, and as the night drew into its latest hours, everyone’s spirit left their bodies and went off to dream.

The belief that we leave our bodies when dreaming is nothing new, but I’m always intrigued by the idea of how we are all connected as living beings on this planet. Do we tend to sit in the same spot on the train in the morning because we know the person beside us from another dimension? Is our favorite dish an echo of a past life, or a delicacy we enjoyed with a lover in a dream?

When I found David Tomlin (now Yorke) via Channel 4 UK, I knew he’d “get” what I was trying to convey. The team came together quickly, and itself was a dream combination. Alongside David was Ju Shardlow on production via Just In Case Films, with a wonderfully creative and efficient approach to production.

Among the impressive array of acting talent in the film is Durassie Kiangangu, who I noticed a few years before our project in short films and advertisements. Serendipity supreme!

With support from the Earls Court Film Festival, our friends, family, and inspired strangers on Kickstarter, we raised the money to get the film underway.

The animated dream parts are actually still open to funding, as David and I are looking to complete the art. All told, the film was still a success and garnered a number of awards, including Best Experimental Short at Montecatini in Italy. The win took us to Tuscany, a place I never thought I’d see in my life.

Or maybe, we’d been there before…
